As she looked at her palms she remembered her mother`s last words to her,"life is what you make it." She reflected on these few words and all she could come up with was that she had ruined her life.
"I am hungry," the little boy said.Tamia looked up with a smile on her face.Thabo was her joy. Even though the little boy looked like his father who she never wanted to be reminded of,she still cherished her little boy.
She took the boy by the hand to the little table by the corner and gave him a banana and some water. She then left him to play with his hand made flute and went back to her work.
Weaving baskets and garden chairs from straw is the only thing she could do to raise Thabo. As she continued weaving she remembered how Thabo`s father had walked out on her while she was still pregnant. The memories were so vivid.Life had treated her so badly. She looked much older for her age.All the youth had vanished within a few days.
"Are you coming with me today?."The voice made her jump.Sipho was standing behind her with Thabo in his arms. She smiled at him,he was a good friend. He had been there for her for quite a while now.How could she say no,?and besides she knew very well that he would not take no for an answer.
Being an evangelist for such a long time,Sipho was not the kind of man who would give up on people so easily."Just give me a few minutes to clear my stuff," she said.
On the way to church Tamia kept asking herself this question,"does this church thing really work?" She kept coming back to the same answer"if all those girls in that church are doing so well then surely it must work."I will just give it my all and see what happens. What other choice do i have anyway?"
