As the door slammed shut behind me I knew that there was no turning back. I had been my parent’s daughter, my husband’s wife and my kid’s mother. I have been everything to everyone except to myself, but now that they are gone from my life for one reason or another, it is time for me to start searching for the person that I lost many years ago, or perhaps it might be better put, to try to find the person I never met.

As I start my journey, all I have is the clothes on my back; I do not have a particular destination, though I feel led to start my search in the wilderness. A voice is guiding me to turn to the left then to the right, saying “Now walk this way”. As the days turn into weeks, and the weeks into months and years, I feel no hunger, nor do the elements affect me; however, my need to quench my thirst is getting stronger.

The wilderness offers me anything that I may want to make me happy, but how long can these “things” make me happy for? Eventually they get old, break down, become boring or just plain don’t make me happy anymore, but most of all they do not help me find who I am. So I continue on, dodging all the temptations that try to pull me off the path that I have chosen to follow.

My thirst is getting stronger and my willpower is weakening, I finally drop to my knees and look up and cry out with all that is in me “Will I ever find who you want me to be? Will you ever quench the thirst I have to know the person I really am?” Then with what little I have left, I plead, “Please don’t forsake me anymore because I am so thirsty and I know only you can fill that emptiness”.

Finally I could stand no longer; all I could do is crawl. Then, I hear a sound, and I continue over the stones and through the thorny bushes that are tearing away at my flesh to try and keep me from where the sound is coming from, but I am numb to the pain now, and keep going on.

Finally, there it is, how beautiful the sight. I could have had anything I wanted on this journey, but it was this wonderful, rapidly flowing river of life that I was thirsty for. It was this wonderful verse that kept me going: “But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life”. John 4:14(NIV)

I am never thirsty anymore because I now know who I am, I am a child of God and everyday I have an endless river of His love and forgiveness.
