Understanding God’s will can be a challenging, yet rewarding experience. It is not easy submitting to God’s will. Human nature is such, that we want to do our own thing, on our own time, in our own way.

Submitting to God’s will takes humility -- denying oneself and letting go of pride. Humility does not mean treating oneself like “dirt,” downing oneself, or denying the basic human needs, such as food, shelter, or clothing. It is not an act of degradation. Rather, humility is the act of the will -- surrendering our will to the will of God.

How do we know the will of God? First, we need to have a desire to obey God, or follow Him. It is impossible to handle every situation on our own human strength. Human beings falter. We get weak. We get sick. We mess up. One has to get to that point in life where there is no other way but God. Sometimes, circumstances force us to turn to God.

Second, daily scripture reading and praying helps us to understand God’s will for our lives. If we don’t take time to study the Bible, we won’t know what God wants us to do. The Bible is like a map, a guide, to life’s problems and situations. Continuously praying keeps our mind open to understanding God’s will.

Understanding God’s will is a process. It takes time, patience, and endurance. As we obediently do what is currently before us, God’s will and purpose for our lives gradually unfolds.
