Encouragement

As I write this article on faith, I’m encouraging myself. I need more faith. Therefore, writing about faith will help me to continue to faithfully trust the Lord.

“What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see.” (Hebrews 11:1; NLT).

Christians need to be encouraged. So many times we wonder when and how the bills will be paid. We worry about the basics -- food, shelter, and clothing. In the New Testament, you can find various verses where Jesus encourages his disciples to observe the birds in the air -- how God, our Father, provides for them; the lilies of the field -- how they are clothed in beautiful colors. Nature and animals don’t worry. God is the creator of this earth, so he knows all, and sees all. If God gives animals the instincts to survive, how much more will God supply all of our needs.

Abraham had so much faith, he was about to sacrifice his only son, Issac. Hebrews 12:17 - 19 (NLT) reads, “It was by faith that Abraham offered Issac as a sacrifice when God was testing him. Abraham, who had received God’s promises was ready to sacrifice his only son Issac, though God had promised him, “Issac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted. Abraham assumed that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again…”

We can learn from Abraham who took God at his words. When Abraham raised his knife to sacrifice his son, the angel of the Lord said, “Lay down the knife…Do not hurt the boy in any way for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld even your beloved son from me. “ (Genesis 22:12, NLT) God provided a ram in the bush for Abraham’s sacrifice.

The eleventh chapter of Hebrews has many examples of people who had strong faith. Regardless of the circumstances, they still trusted God. We can trust God, too -- have strong confidence and assurance that God can do the impossible.
