An Awful Feeling To Stand There Alone

I remember back in grade school when recess came around, how I dreaded when we had to play team games on the playground.

For when teams were picked, I knew who the last one would be, the one with no athletic skills at all, that was me.

It was such an awful feeling to stand there alone; that feeling of being unwanted stayed with me long after I was grown.

The talents I had were not the ones valued by the kids that I knew, so I hid in the background creating a world of daydreams to which I flew.

In that world I was accepted, no one made fun of me, I could love being in school, reading books, content just to be.

On the outside I was just a child with not much to say, preferring to read by myself than to go out to play - the walls I built back then were thick and tall, and behind them I hid, safe and protected from them all.

Even after I was grown, these fears stayed with me; I would not try if I thought I was going to fail, and each little rejection that I felt added to the walls, and I hid behind them, growing more and more frail.

Then one day I met Jesus, who gave me new eyes with which to see that I was precious to Him, for He had chosen me!

Instead of being the last one in the game, Jesus had picked me first, and called me out by name - He gently took my fears and threw them away, and taught me that in Him there was a brand new way - that in Him there was nothing I could not try, and with His help I found the courage to fly.

As time passed, I learned that even dreams could come true, for He gave me the world when I met you.

Now I thank God each day for rescuing me, for without knowing how I was tied up.

I could now appreciate the joy of being free - everything that came before, everything that I knew, was just a preparation for being able to love you.

"each little rejection that I felt added to the walls" Rejection is such a terrible blow to our sense of worth. But our dear Lord Jesus was so rejected. He understands and loves us so much. He would never dream of rejecting one of us. It really is an awful feeling to stand there alone. How blessed we are when we KNOW we are not alone in ANY endeavor. Your love letters to Lucian are precious, Trish. And Jesus still gets all the glory. Be encouraged.
