“But I am poor and sorrowful; let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high. I will praise the name of God with a song, and I will magnify Him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bull, which has horns and hooves.

The humble shall see this and be glad; and you who seek God, your hearts shall live. For the LORD hears the poor, and does not despise His prisoners.

Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them. For God will save Zion, and build the cities of Judah, that they may dwell there and possess it. Also the descendants of His servants shall inherit it, and those who love His name shall dwell in it.” Psalms 69:29-36

The psalmist was “transparent” before God for he knew the uselessness of attempting to hide anything from Him, and also knew the relief of laying all before Him. With the admission comes the plea for a salvation that only God could enact, “Set me up on high.”

David’s heart was overflowing with songs of praise as previous psalms testify to, and his desire was to elevate God in the eyes of the people hearing those songs. (God needs no elevation but in the praise of Him the hearts of the people are elevated, enriched and educated.)

He felt, and rightfully so, that his praise would mean more to the LORD than sacrifice and this honouring is indeed a sacrifice for it normally does not come easy to us. “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” Hebrews 13:15

The humble know that the ability to praise the LORD is all from Him and their hearts are alive in the seeking of Him; for the LORD hears them and as “prisoners” of His grace (what a glorious life sentence this is), they know His love. All creation is called upon to praise Him.

Zion will be saved and built with eternal cities wherein those “who love His name” will dwell. What a promise for Israel and for those who belong to the God of Israel by His grace and for His glory.
