My Greatest Possession
By Robert Schaetzle
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope. Psalm 130: 5 ESV
God’s word I have laid up in my heart over my lifetime really is my greatest treasure. More than the selected family heirlooms stored in my closet for safe keeping. God’s word becomes evidence to His preeminence and promises. Daily I wait upon the Lord each morning praying scripture in my heart. It takes away anxiousness and fear what we witness all around us. Stuff we hear about every day, from news we listen to each day.
My purposing to allow my heart and soul to wait for the ‘voice of God’s Spirit and word,’ are of much greater importance than fear of what’s going on all around us. One of my favorite promises with blessing comes from Psalm 103:20.
Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word!
The value and of this scripture teaches me to become a better ‘doer of God’s word.’ James, in his epistle encourages us this way. ‘But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.’ James 1:22-24
Joshua set a mandate for the Israelites before crossing into the ‘Promised Land,’ when he told them: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.’
Joshua 1:8
Father, having of your word in my heart is my greatest possession
