Preserve My Life

“Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation; preserve my life from fear of the enemy. They encourage themselves in an evil matter; they talk of laying snares secretly; they say. ‘Who will see them?’ They devise iniquities; ‘We have perfected a shrewd scheme.’

Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep. But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly they shall be wounded. So He will make them stumble over their own tongue; all who see them shall flee away, all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider His doing.

The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and trust in Him. And all the upright in heart shall glory.” Psalms 64: 1, 5-10

Even though in the midst of harassment from that which was plaguing his life, the psalmist engages in meditation upon his God. He asks not to be preserved from his enemy (although this would surely be his request also) but to know freedom from the fear that pursued him also.

The actions of those hunting him were beyond his control but his reaction to the situation dictated how he lived his life.

All that the enemy planned was under the all-seeing eye of God, though thought to be carried out in secret. It is easy to get caught up in the schemes of the world and the psalmist was wisely wary of them, knowing that God was privy to their every endeavour and would react accordingly. An arrow from Him would never miss its mark.

Upon His dealing with the offenders, fear would enter hearts, along with a wise consideration of His doing.

The righteous (those rightly related to the LORD) know preservation from fear of the enemy and because of this will know gladness in the LORD as they trust in Him. Glory awaits the upright in heart.

Because my life can be greatly affected by fear, unhealthy fear of an enemy that has been defeated, may I call out to my God for preservation from that which only serves to weaken me. The fear of the Lord and a recognition of His sovereign control over all is a healthy fear that strengthens me for any battles that may arise. I shall be glad in Him and trust in Him by His grace and for His glory.
