“When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.
But those who seek my life, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth. They shall fall by the sword; they shall be a portion for jackals.
But the king shall rejoice in God; everyone who swears by Him shall glory; but the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.” Psalm 63:6-11
When he lies down to sleep, what does the psalmist remember about the day past as he ventures into the night? There could have been so much to occupy his mind, but “I remember You”; “I meditate on You”.
He could lie down in peace in recollection of the help of the One who now bade him in rest under the shadow of His wings. There is where rejoicing would be found. A soul that follows closely behind Him and knows the upholding of His right hand could lie down in peace and sleep.
His mind does drift to the challenging parts of his day but only that they be put into perspective while regarding the LORD’s supremacy over them. The contrast is startling when..... thoughts upon sure destruction are overcome by thoughts of sure rejoicing. The enemy will fall and lying lips will be stopped.
Because “when you lie down, you will not be afraid; yes, you will lie down and your sleep shall be sweet” (Prov. 3:24) is a promise to those who are wise in knowing the character of their God as revealed in His Word. May I venture to know Him better through the day that my remembrance of Him will bring sweet comfort in the night, by His grace and for His glory.
