Godliness With Contentment - Our Best Possession
By Robert Schaetzle

But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 1 Timothy 6: 6-7 ESV

With my arrival into this world, I possessed nothing. When I depart, I will take nothing. An ole country gospel song goes… ‘You can’t carry a U Haul behind the hearse.’ So, my hope really is built on nothing less than ‘Jesus Blood, His sufficiency, and righteousness.’ Nothing of material substance has everlasting worth according to God! What I take with me to heaven will be only what is given from above. Those character qualities that our Lord put into my heart to ‘put on Christ.’

But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ Philippians 3:7-8

The Apostle Paul wrote these truths. Understanding what it meant to empty himself of worldly possessions. Intimacy with Jesus is far greater gain than anything one might own. To separate ourselves from believing our eternity is about our worldly possessions or inheritance.

I have many items called ‘family heirlooms’ that will be passed down to my loved ones. But as much sentimental family value they hold, they will not be what brings us closer to taking the hand of Jesus when we take our last breath stepping into eternity, to be in our Lord’s presence.

The character qualities of Godliness determine what crowns we will be given to lay before Him one day. My intimacy with Jesus now, will produce what comes with me into heaven, not my family heirlooms.

Father, when you take my hand into eternity, what I take with me will only be what you give from your love, thank you. Amen

Robert serves in a Sharing and Caring Ministry encouraging others to know God’s intimacy.
