The month of October was dedicated to many Saints as with every other month of a given year. There are some prominent Saints that stood out during this month though the contribution of each Saint is valuable.
1. St. Therese of the Child Jesus
Also known as the Little Flower of Jesus. Born in Liseux on 2nd Januray, 1973, she is one of our youngest Saints in the Church, she died at the age of 24 from Tuberculosis and was canonized 28 years after her passing.
She believed in serving through the ordinary daily work and routine at the Convent. Gardening, sweeping, cleaning, helping others were the mundane tasks that brought her happiness.
She said it is in the little things that great joy can be found.
She believed that just as Zacchaeus was asked by Jesus to come down from the tree so that the Lord could dine with him, we are also called to descend at times in life from our own vanities so that we can invite the Lord into the home of our hearts.
Her Memoir, 'The Story of a Soul' which explained her theology of 'The Little Way' became very popular after her death. In one of the excerpts she mentioned, "I will seek out a means of getting to Heaven by a little way- very short and a very straight way that is wholly new. I mean to try to find a lift by which I may be raised onto God, for I am too tiny to climb the steep stairway of perfection. Thine Arms, then O Jesus, are the lift which must raise me up unto Heaven. To get there, I need not grow. On the contrary, I must remain little, I must become still less."
She promised to send a shower of roses all the way down from heaven at her death.
On her deathbed, she said, "I have reached the point of not being able to suffer anymore because all suffering is sweet to me." Her last words were, " My God, I Love You." Her feast is celebrated on 1st October.
2. St. Theresa of Avila.
She was a Doctor of the Church born in the sixteenth century and was a great reformist of the Carmelite Order. Referred to as a mystic as she received various visions and supernatural ecstasies.
Some of her widely soul inspiring phrases which illuminates the heart are as follows:
“It shouldn’t be thought that he who suffers isn’t praying, for he is offering this to God. And often he is praying much more than the one who is breaking his head in solitude, thinking that if he has squeezed out some tears he is thereby praying.”
“I would not want any other prayer than that which makes the virtues grow in me. If it should be accompanied by great temptations, dryness, and trials leaving me with greater humility, I would consider it a good prayer. That prayer is the best prayer that pleases God the most.”
“Let us do our part, and God will then do what He wills. This is God’s cause, and all will end well. My hope is in Him; do not be distressed."
"Let nothing perturb you, nothing frighten you. All things pass. God does not change. Patience achieves everything."
"The feeling remains that God is on the journey, too."
"Christ has no body now, but yours. No hands, no feet on earth, but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ looks with compassion into the world. Yours are the feet with which Christ walks to do good. Yours are the hands with which Christ blesses the world."
Her feast is on 15th October.
3. St. Maria Faustina Kowalska - A Polish Nun, she was Jesus' personal instrument and diary to reveal to the world about his great and unfathomable mercy to mankind. Through her the Lord made it known to the world that before he comes as a judge, he will come as a merciful Savior and there is still time for even the most bitter sinners to avail of his abyss of mercy.
St. Faustina's profound love for Jesus is manifested in her writings and specially in her anticipation of the day of glory with the Lord as follows:

O day, of which I dreamed through all my life,
Waiting long for You, O God,
For it is You alone whom I desire.
You are the one and only of my heart; all else is naught.
O day of delight, day of eternal bliss,
God of great majesty, my beloved Spouse,
You know that nothing will satisfy a virgin heart.
On Your tender Heart I rest my brow.

How many of us actually think and wonder about this day when it will come to pass in our lives and we will be standing in the glory of Christ, to behold him in his temple, to dwell with him all the days of eternity? Her feast day is on 5th October.
4. St. Luke
He was a Greek Physician. He accompanied St. Paul on his missionary journey. He was not one of the Apostles. He wrote the Third Gospel and Acts of the Apostles. He was a skilled artist who painted the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary during her lifetime, known as the Hodigitria, which means “She who shows the way.”
Luke is represented by an ox, one of the four living creatures mentioned in the Book of Revelation. The ox symbolizes sacrifice and service, reflecting the themes of Jesus’ ministry in the Gospel of Luke.
He gave significant importance to the role of women specially Mary’s role in salvation history from the Annunciation to the mysteries of the Holy Childhood of Jesus with his parents as well as the role of holy women like Elizabeth, Martha, Mary and the Samaritan woman.
His Gospel is known as the 'Gospel of Joy and rejoicing.' From the joyful heralding of the angels at Jesus’ birth to the rejoicing of the disciples after the resurrection, his narrative gives us hope, faith and happiness. His feast day is on 18th October.
5. St. John Paul II
He was Polish and the first non Italian Pope.
He was the second longest serving Pope with 27 years of Pontificate.
He helped to bring about the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe. He beatified and canonized more Saints than any other Pope before him. He promulgated the Catechism of the Catholic Church in 1992 and reformed the Canon Law.
It was he who instituted the feast of Divine Mercy on the Sunday after Easter in keeping with the desires of Jesus as expressed to St. Faustina.
He was canonized on 27th April, 2014, the Feast of Divine Mercy.
Some of his famous quotes are as follows:
"Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song."
"As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live."
"Have no fear of moving into the unknown."
"I plead with you–never, ever give up on hope, never doubt, never tire, and never become discouraged."
His feast is celebrated on 22nd October.

He is depicted carrying the image of Jesus in his hand in attribution of a miracle when he was proclaiming the Word of God. King Abagar of Edessa had prayed to Jesus to cure him of his deadly leprosy and he sent an artist to bring him an image of Jesus. Impressed with Abagar's great faith, Jesus pressed His face on a cloth, leaving the impression of His face on it. Jesus then gave this cloth to St. Jude, who took the image to Abagar and cured him.
The feast of St. Jude is celebrated on 28th October along with the feast of St. Simon the Zealot.
