Marian feast days in the liturgical year of the church are celebrated in honor and veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
We look at some of the prominent and popular feasts which are traditionally followed in the month of September and August.
The Birthday of the Blessed Virgin - Every year on 8th September, the birthday of the Mother of Jesus is celebrated with great festivities all over the world. She is loved by one and all.
The Seven Sorrows of Our Lady- On 15th September, we remember the Seven Swords that pierced the heart of Mary as she beheld her Son Jesus in his passion. The Stabat Mater recalls her anguish feeling her acute sorrow expressed in statements so true; " Holy Mother pierce me through, in my heart each wound renew of my Saviour crucified."; "At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful mother weeping, close to Jesus to the last."; "Let me mingle tears with thee, mourning him who mourned for me, all the days that I may live."; "By the Cross with you to stay, there with you to weep and pray is all I ask of you to give."; "Let me share with you his pain, who for all our sins was slain, who for me in torments died."; "Make me feel as thou as felt, make my soul to glow and melt with the love of Christ my Lord."; "Can the human heart refrain from partaking in her pain, in that Mother's pain untold?"; "Is there one who would not weep, whelmed in miseries so deep, Christ's Mother to behold?"; "Christ above in torment hangs, she beneath beholds the pangs of her dying, glorious child."; " Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled, she beheld her tender child, all with bloody scourges rent." and "Virgin of all Virgins blest, listen to my fond request, let me share your grief divine."
The Coronation - On 22nd August we rejoice at Mary being crowned the Queen of Heaven. The Queen Mother stands next to her Son, the King of heaven and earth.
The Assumption into heaven - On 15th August, the Assumption of Mary being taken up into heaven by her Son, body and soul to be with him forever. History recounts that just before the death of the Blessed Mother all the apostles gathered in Jerusalem around her. Mother Mary prior to her death was visited by her Son Jesus who foretold that her time had come. Choirs of Angels were present to lift her soul up to heaven. After she was buried and her tomb opened, it was empty, a clear sign that her body did not see any decay as she had given birth to the Son of God.
Our Lady of the Snow - In Rome, Italy in the year 352, lived a nobleman, John and his wife who although were very wealthy were also childless. Hence they chose the Mother of God as the heir to all their fortune. At the suggestion of Pope Liberius, they prayed that the Blessed Virgin would reveal to them on how to do this by a particular sign.
In response to their prayers, the Virgin Mother during the night of August 5, appeared to John and his wife and also to Pope Liberius, directing them to build a church in her honor on the crown of the Esquiline Hill. And the sign that John and his wife looked eagerly to was that Snow would cover the crest of this hill.
Where snowfall is rarely seen in Rome, on that night the flakes fell gently and silently in a mantle covering the peaks of the Esquiline hill though it was unusual and impossible for it to snow in Rome at this time of the month.
In the morning the news spread like wildfire fire and the people gathered on the throng of the hill to see with their own eyes this beautiful white splendor of Snow. Interesting though, the Snow fell in a specific pattern outlining the shape of the future church which the Blessed Lady had directed John and his wife to build. When it was revealed that the Snow was a sign from the Mother of God, the people immediately honoured her with another title, Our Lady of the Snows.
Today, the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, in Rome, on August 5 is in honor of this same heavenly event.
Our Lady Queen of Angels - Mary is the Queen of Angels as she is the closest to God in divine union and holier than all the choirs of Angels present in heaven and in the hierarchy of the church she comes after the Blessed Trinity being the Mother of God. The Angels obey her smallest commands and run to fulfill her wishes with an angelic trust and faith in her.
Saint Francis of Assisi repaired a church in the year 1207, which was in ruins and belonged to the Benedictines of Subasio, a mile away from Assisi and was called the Portiuncula. He named the church Our Lady of the Angels and celebrated the first feast on August 2, 1942. It was on this same day that Christopher Columbus knowing there was a plenary indulgence granted to all who received Holy Communion on that day, went with all his crew to Mass, received the Eucharist, packed his ship called the Santa Maria, the Holy Mary and set sail in quest for the New World. It took him seventy-two days to cross the ocean. The day of his landing in America was a special feast of Our Lady, October 12.
There is a also a church dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels in Rome by Pope Pius IV in the year 1561. This was to secure her protection for Catholics against the horrors of the heretics that had started in that century.
