"Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven".
This beautiful prayer taught to us by Jesus glorifying his heavenly Father is recited faithfully down the centuries and will continue until the end of the world.
God our Omnipotent Father, our Creator loves us more than any parent can love his child. He loves us with our faults and sins. He created the entire Universe in six days, rested on the seventh day and called it the Sabbath. He created Man and Woman in his own image.
Jesus shared a special relationship with his Father.
He called upon his Father numerous times during his earthly life, he taught about his Father to the children of God.
Abba Father who used to speak directly to Abraham and Moses from the sky, came among his children as the Son of Man to be with them in human form. Today God continues to speak to us through the Holy Spirit.
We see various instances in the Bible where Jesus speaks about his Father, revealing his glory as follows:
In the Gospel of John 14:5-14 in a descriptive manner, Jesus reveals the Father to his apostles when Thomas tells him that they did not know where Jesus was going so how could they know the way. But Jesus responds, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
But Philip goes on to ask Jesus to show them the Father and that would be enough for them.
Jesus answers, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.".
The prophet Hosea too explicitly describes the love of Abba Father. (11:1-4) "When Israel was a child, I loved him and out of Egypt I called my son. But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them."
On Abba Father chastising us, St. Paul explains in his letter to the Hebrews 12:5-11, "And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son. Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."
At the Baptism of Jesus, the Father's voice spoke from the cloud that Jesus was his beloved Son in whom he was well pleased.
Again at the Transfiguration, the voice of the Father was heard from above that Jesus was his Son in whom he was well pleased and to listen to him.
How many of us pay heed to the voice of the Father and listen to Jesus?
How many of us are living in the footsteps of the life of Jesus so that we too can hear the Father's approval about us that we are his beloved children in whom he is well pleased?
This is food for thought! Food for our soul, food for our salvation.
This food has been given to us in the Body of Christ, the Father's Manna for us as he once rained down the manna bread from heaven in the desert.
Today in the desert of our life, in the wilderness that closes in on us, in the stark sands that lead to nowhere, in the scorching trials that burn us, do we accept the food of life with a grateful heart that it will not just satisfy a physical hunger but that this food will raise us up on the final day?
