“After these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased. And Jesus went up on a mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?’ But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.” John 6:1-6

The question Jesus asked was a question that threw the spotlight on the impossible. It would be humanly impossible to satisfy the hunger of the people immediately. But the God of all resources and of the impossible knew already what He was going to do to address this need.

Asking Philip about the dilemma was just to emphasize the reality of human incapability. Jesus knew what He was about to do...graciously give the people and disciples further proof of His deity by feeding their hungry bodies and more importantly their hungry souls as well.
