What Do Christians Know? A Study From First John

The first letter that the Apostle John wrote to the churches of his day contains the words, “we know,” 22 times. Each of these are important truths upon which Christians can have a confident assurance. Many are very comforting. However, some of these assurances come with conditions. Each of these verses begins with “we know.” 


     “We know that...

 1. We have come to know him if we keep his commandments and walk in the ways of Jesus (2:3 and 5).

 2. We are living in the last hour because the spirit of antichrist is already here (2:18).

 3. We have the truth (2:21).

 4. Everyone who is born of God practices righteousness (2:29).

 5. When Jesus appears we shall be like him (3:2).

 6. Jesus came to take away our sins, and in Jesus there is no sin (3:5).

 7. We have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers(3:14). 

 8. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and no murderer has eternal life abiding in him (3:15).

 9. Jesus laid down his life for us (3:16).

10. We are of the truth and reassure our hearts before God (3:19).

11. God’s Spirit abides in us (3:24).

12. The Spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God (4:2). 

13. Spirit of truth and the spirit of error (4:6).

14. We abide in Christ, and He in us (4:13).

15. We have come to know and believe the love that God has for us (4:16).

16. We love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments (5:2).

17. We have eternal life (5:13).

18. God hears our prayers (5:15). 

19.God gives us our requests if we ask according to his will (5:14). 

20. Whoever is born of God does not keep on sinning, but God protects him and the evil one does not touch him (5:18).

21.We are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one (5:19).

22. The Son of God has come and gives us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true (5:20).”
