After Jesus interacts with the woman caught in adultery he has conversations with his followers about who he really is. People are perplexed at this person born in a lowly manger to Mary and Joseph, who also claimed to have come from God, and to BE God. He claimed to be the “living water” and the “bread of life,” and the “light of the world.” Some even questioned that he might have a demon! After much debate the crowd asked Jesus, “What do you make yourself out to be?” Jesus responded, “Before Abraham was, I am”(8:48-58). 

     Abraham lived 2,000 years before Jesus, and the Jews considered themselves to be offspring of Abraham. Jesus, however, was claiming to be in existence before Abraham. How could that be? 

     In spite of Jesus’s claims and miracles, people wanted to believe that he was nothing more than a prophet or good teacher. The same is true today. The secular culture does not see Jesus as anyone more than a role model for living a righteous life.

     Now Jesus goes one step further. In Chapter 9, he restores sight to a blind man. In 9:32 it is recorded, “Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of one born blind.” Even after this people are still skeptical about the identity of Jesus. 

     After much questioning of the former blind man, he responded, “One thing I do know, that though I was blind now I see.” Jesus still heals today. There are many cases where doctors are unable to explain how a patient was healed against all medical odds.

     So, what keeps a person from believing in Jesus as the Son of God in human flesh, who rose from the dead, and offers new life like being “born again” with hope, purpose, peace, and eternal life? 

     As the man was physically blind, many today have spiritual blindness. People have been deceived There is pride. Because of the condition of the world today, the culture is crying for a savior, but looking in all the wrong places. Many don’t accept him because they don’t know about the REAL Jesus. They simply associate him with being religious, not knowing that they can have a personal relationship with him. Some think it is too simple to just believe. They want to add good works or obeying some religious law. 

     So, how DOES one believe in Jesus? It must be done by faith in his claims  backed up by what history records. As stated in the beginning of this series of articles, people accept what history records as being true, even though it has been written by authors who were not living at the time. In the Gospel of John the sayings and events associated with Jesus were recorded by people who lived during his time and were eye-witnesses to his life. 

     With all that has been said, do you now believe and accept this REAL JESUS into your life as your one and only Savior? If not, why not?
