Marriage
(Celebrating Friendship in Marriage 6)
Commitment:
In the takeaway pack (from the marriage event we attended 8th March 2018) are some nuggets I’d like to share with you from the point ~ 'Commitment:
So don’t go it alone friends. It’s a lonely place to be when we isolate ourselves and try to go it alone.
Tip_____:Stick together and work through challenging situations together so that you can reap the rewards together.
o Stick together through thick and thin.
o Affair-proof your marriage - set clear boundaries.
o Don’t go it alone.
o Choose to love'
There was a ‘Take away’ instruction for each point—homework for each area of importance in maintaining the marriage. The one for commitment is:
“Find a couple that you can share the journey of marriage with and agree to meet up on a regular basis.”
We wanted to share this ‘Takeaway’ above the others because it will naturally incorporate the other areas. When we decided to get married, we went to a local church minister who shared with us the structure/ order of the marriage ceremonies. We looked at what Scriptures are generally read at the wedding, the types of songs generally sung, where the family members sit, who carries the ring etc.
We were then linked with a couple from the church who invited us to dinner and encouraged us on the journey. We kept in touch with the couple even after we left the area but the wife died shortly after our son was born. They were like marriage mentors to us which was good for us as we had no counsel before or after the wedding. We could call them whenever we had questions and would get answers.
When we left London we were wondering in the desert of marriage needing support and guidance but finding it really difficult to come by. In the summer of 2012, when we were desperate for guidance, God brought us to another couple who became our unofficial mentors. As we read the ‘Take Away’ instruction we both called their names and then realised that’s exactly what they’ve been to us over the past six years. They were the ones entertaining our son while we were out educating ourselves on how to ‘Build a lasting marriage’.
So don’t go it alone friends. It’s a lonely place to be when we isolate ourselves and try to go it alone.
Tip_____:Stick together and work through challenging situations together so that you can reap the rewards together.
