Let me tell you about someone special. His name is Brutus. He is a miniature wire terrier who is 16 years old and blind. I met him a few weeks ago and last night his owner brought him over for a dog walk. In our neighborhood we organized a “Walk Your Dog” night. Interesting enough more people showed up with their furry friends than we expected. Brutus, the littlest of the bunch was raring to go.

As the walk continued Brutus took lead running most of the way. In my mind I thought, “Ok, we have a 16 year old dog that is blind going with us. This is going to be a slow walk.” But to my dismay, Brutus consistently remained in the lead. I was not the only one taken back by his fervor and energy.

Then I began to think of how we as Christians tend to think that that our elderly predecessors are not able to keep up with us. Perhaps we even think that they are out of touch spiritually with the recent happenings of the church and their old fashioned ways of reaching people just don’t work anymore. Brutus reminded me that we need the older predecessors more now than ever.

I have a handful of older saints in whom I look up to for guidance and direction. Their passion for Christ and their desire to make a difference has never changed. They compel me to not give up and to keep giving my all. Brutus was so full of energy I had to run to keep up with him. If we take a few minutes to sit and listen to an older saint and their experiences, many times it will cause us to want to run a better race. For instance, when I listen to the wisdom of my father who is a pastor, it makes me want to be a better Christian. When I listen to the teachings of my mentor, it makes me want to study the Word more passionately. When I hear an elderly saint pray, I want to spend more time in God’s presence.

Oh how I hunger for revival. Many a preacher has prayed that God will use the younger generation to bring revival. I agree with Abraham when he said to the rich man, who was in hell,
Abraham said unto him, “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.”
(Luke 16:29) KJV

I hear Abraham saying there is no need for a new generation to go warn the present generation that they need to follow God’s commands. We have all we need to know from the saints who have walked before us. Because of God’s grace the generation before us has upheld God’s decree and passed on the legacy. It is our choice to take up our cross and follow or to ignore their call with lowly disdain.

Perhaps we need to hold up the arms of the older saints so they can be strengthened and lead us into victory. It is not our choosing how God is going to bring revival to this great land. Let us not forget those who have blazed the trail before us who have caused our load to be a lot lighter. Let us not forget the decades of prayers and tears that have been shed so that we can reap the harvest God has prepared. Let us not forget the modern day prophets of our previous generation who have spoken out the Word of God boldly with fire and conviction. Let us take the baton that they pass on to us with sacred responsibility. Let us not forget the servant hearts that have given their all to see souls receive their redemptive day! Dear brothers and sisters, oh how we need the older generation as much as the younger one!
