As I look back at my life I realize that I have experienced many moments in which I was totally captivated by someone or something going on around me. One I can remember clearly is when my oldest son discovered he had hands as an infant. I sat back and watched him lift his hand up above his head within eye view. He would then turn it from backside to palm side several times as if he never knew he had such a thing. I marveled at the fact that everything was new and captivating to him.
When I met my husband Gaetan he captivated my heart instantly. He continues to do so in many different ways. For instance I can be very challenged and frustrated when it comes to high tech matters. Gaetan will start from scratch and slowly and decisively dissect a problem until he has a solution to it. I sit back and marvel at his ability to do this. In my moment of frustration he will gently teach me what I need to do to overcome the obstacle so I can move on and through it. He definitely has the gift of teaching. Not all of us have the gift of teaching, but we do have the gift of learning.
I somewhat laugh when I write this remembering my college days. My voice professor called me into his study and told me that he had not told a student in 24 years what he was going to tell me. “Jane, when we expound upon your natural gift, we take away God’s glory. You need to go on and let God be your teacher.” In my latter years I have thought what a gracious way of telling me that I was un-teachable.
God had captured my heart at the young age of sixteen. Unto this day I find myself more and more captivated by Him. He has been my teacher, my Father, my friend. He has held back many storms in my life as well as walked through many others with me.
We see a beautiful picture of how God captivates his people when we look at the children of Israel journeying in the wilderness for forty years. He was a dark cloud by day and a cloud of fire by night to lead the way. He was a pillar of fire that separated the Pharaoh from God’s people. He is the one who divided the waters of the Red Sea and the Jordan River for the Israel camp to cross. He is the God who spoke to them from the mountain and also dwelt within a man-made tent. He is the same God who wiped out the enemies in masses and judged those in the camp who did not follow His commands. Believe me if I lived back then, He would have my full attention!
Today, I don’t need to see a pillar of fire or a cloud of smoke to know He is with me. I am grateful to be living in a generation where God does not need to do anything else to show me that He loves me. He sent His Son Jesus and it is finished. I now can freely allow Him to captivate me at anytime. Oh, and He still does that! As I read His Word and communicate regularly with Him, I find myself still very much intrigued by His ways and pursuit of me as well.In this moment, I join King David in complete captivation saying:
" O Lord God Almighty, who is like You?
You are mighty O Lord and Your faithfulness surrounds You!"
(Psalm 89:8) NIV
