Why are many people today refusing to turn to God? One common reason has always been pride. Another reason, I believe, is that too many have a false concept of what God is really like, and Christians sometimes have not done a good job of demonstrating that. It is easy to make conclusions based upon assumptions and false perceptions.
The Book of Psalms is a great source of comfort. It also shows a contrast between pride and humility. In addition, it shows the true nature of God. This article is going to look at sections of chapters 31-34. Because there is too much material to cite here, it will be necessary to get a Bible and read it for yourself. Hopefully you have a Bible. If not go to a church and get one. There are important truths in these passages that will help you have a correct view of God. This will, hopefully, put within you a desire to turn to him and accept his grace. Please read the following sections before you go any further:
Psalm 31:7, 14, 19-20, 24
Psalm 32: 1-6, 8, 10
Psalm 33: 13-15, 18
Psalm 34: 2,4, 6-8, 11, 15-19, 22
Do these passages describe the kind of help and hope you are seeking today? Come to God out of humility based upon the truth found in the Bible, not on false assumptions. God is one of grace, lovingkindness, and forgiveness. God's grace means there is nothing so bad that makes you undeserving. There is nothing so good that makes you merit or deserve it. You cannot earn it. You can reject it, however, to your own destruction.
If there are things in your life over which you have no control, or your life is going nowhere down a path of destruction, aimlessness, and hopelessness, turn to God. He is ready and able to help you. He is on your side, if you come to him with the humility of a child. But don't do it just to get your life right. Confess that you are a sinner in need of his grace. Confess that you need a savior. Acknowledge who Jesus claimed to be: the way, the truth, and the life. Realize that he died on the cross and rose from the dead for you, even if you were the only one on earth. You will then experience a spiritual rebirth that will transcend all human understanding. He is here to help you, not condemn you.
I John 5:11-13 says this: "And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life."
Now, go back and read those Psalm passages one more time. Receive Jesus today. Then you can apply the next two verses, 14 and 15. "And this is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us...and we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him." It is God's will that you enter into a relationship with him and find freedom from your past and healing for your hurts. Now that you know what God is really like, what is keeping you from coming to him?
