You may or may not be familiar with the notion of being anointed. This idea comes from the priest being anointed with oil before he enters the tabernacle to ceremonially offer an animal blood sacrifice for the sins of God’s people. Of course, Jesus came to be the spotless Lamb of God for all time when it comes to eternal salvation for those who ask Jesus into their hearts. All Christians are called into service and the Lord has a plan for their lives. They will be anointed for service if they seek the Lord’s will and continue the consecration process after salvation that’s required to fulfill God’s divine destiny.
Are you anointed for service my friend? Has your character been refined and polished into the bright shimmering precious jewel that brings glory to God the Father’s Name? If we were all to stay in the state we were in when we accepted God’s gift of Grace, we wouldn’t be of much value to serve His kingdom in righteousness and purity. To anoint means to rub oil on someone or something. Oil, of course, in historic times was used, and still is, as a healing liniment in many cultures. And in the vein of our religious tradition and roots, olive oil is symbolic of the flowing of the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives. The Holy Spirit raised Christ from the dead and brings healing through the Name of Jesus.
One can think of being anointed with oil as a kind of preparation for service, like the priest in the tabernacle. But what came next after being anointed? It is the blood sacrifice. Jesus was serving humanity by His sacrifice. You and I in order to sacrificially pick up our cross and follow in the footprints of Jesus, also can be prepared for service through the symbolism of being anointed with holiness to carry out God’s goodness in the lives of others. Oil in the Hebrew also means to paint something. But we must go beyond appearance, having our walk match our talk, so we’re not just plated gold but pure gold that represents the true value of being born-again into God’s kingdom through Christ’s sacrifice.
