In order for Christians to effectively carry out the great commission of Christ it’s important to know who we are according to God's Bible. But to understand who we are we must first know who we are to become in the spirit. Even when Jesus walked the face of the earth in human form He was asked questions that any of us would want to know the answers to such as “if you’ve been married more than once who will be your spouse in heaven?” In Matt. 22:29 Jesus answers by asking another question, “don’t you know the scriptures?” Maybe we should ask ourselves the same question today. We’re so educated about so many things but don’t even understand the simple questions the Bible answers for us about our identity.
Granted, there are many questions we don’t have the answers to but the example in this passage is very clear. Jesus said there is no marrying or giving in marriage, but people are like angels of God in heaven. Now when it comes to angels this verse is misunderstood perpetuating the idea we’ll all become angels when we die. We imply it to our children because we think it’s at least a little bit of information about what heaven will be like for those who’ve asked Jesus into their heart and repent of their sin. We grasp at straws about heaven, but this verse simply says that we’ll be in spirit form without physical bodies like the angels.
According to 1 Cor. 12:27 and Romans 7:4 angels are not part of the body of Christ. The Bible says Jesus is our bridegroom and we are His bride knitted together forever through His great sacrifice. In Heb. 2:6 even the angels ask, what’s the big deal with these humans? It’s because we’ve been given all authority in Christ and verse 12 says we are akin to Him like brothers and sisters serving the heavenly Father. I encourage you to explore more who you are and will become through the living Word of God by spending time talking with your heavenly Father and learning about who He is so you’ll know who you’re meant to be in eternity.
