A Trip to Nowhere

Did you ever go on a trip or take a drive, only to find out when you arrived at what you thought was your destination, that the information you had was either incomplete or incorrect? A few years back my wife and I were in a lean, and I mean lean financial state, which left us with few luxuries. However, we attempted to put a little aside for an occasional get-away now and then. This time, we were headed to an annual convention that takes place west and north of where we live. Nothing fancy or elaborate—just down to earth folks like us. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. After traveling about two hours and stopping to eat our packed lunch along the way, we arrived at our destination. When we located the place where the festivities were to be held, we were told that this year it will be half the size it normally is due to budget problems. We were stunned! There was absolutely no such information distributed prior to our arrival!
Well, once we put aside our disappointment, we regrouped. It was only about noon, and we didn’t want to waste a beautiful day. After unsuccessfully looking for something to do in that area, I remembered another event that was also scheduled closer to where we live. So we decided to take the two hour trip back closer to home and find this event. We arrived in that particular town, only to learn that the event had taken place hours earlier, and was wrapping-up. Talk about being frustrated and discouraged! But, we got over it.
However, after the “dust settled” and things returned to “normal”, the Lord showed me a parallel to the Christian life. Let’s be honest, aren’t there believers out there whose Christian walk is like those wasted trips? They’re operating with “half-baked” or erroneous information—whatever forms that may be in—only to be disillusioned and disappointed when they arrive at what they think is their destination and find that it’s unfulfilling. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly”, the Gospel of John Chapter 10-v.10b (Old and New King James versions). Brothers and sisters, should we settle for anything less?
Our hope and prayer is that, if you are one of those, or know someone who seems to be heading on “A trip to Nowhere”, that this will be a challenge and encouragement to seek out that more abundant life that our Lord offers to all of his followers.
Now may the God of all comfort bestow His richest blessings on us all. Amen.
