I count people’s faults
And don’t count my joys
I treat my blessings as discarded toys
That no longer meet my needs
That no longer meet my greeds
So I toss them to the side
And no longer look inside
Of a joyful heart
Count MY offenses?
Oh please Lord no
You’ve already promised
To wash me whiter than snow
“So why do you count them?”
He gently asks
“Why do you count your sins
That’s where self-contempt begins
When you ignore My sacrifice
You ignore the costly price
Paid to wash you clean
And when you count your neighbor’s sins
That is where self-righteousness begins
Count your joys
Count your blessings
Count your gifts
Prevent the rifts
That comes when you count the wrong things
Such ill-advised counting only brings
Pain
Jesus says
“You cannot count
My thoughts toward you
You know that’s right
You know that’s true
While counting wrong things
Can bring malignant pleasure
Counting right things
Brings joy without measure
Count the hearts
Not the faults
Looking on the outward
Only parts
Us from our friends
Counting like Jesus
Is a really good fit
It will bring us joy
You can count on it.
