To earn enough credits that they would outweigh
The sins I'd committed so I'd be deemed fit
To end up in heaven and not in hell's pit.
I faithfully attended my duties at church
And learned what it meant, in my careful research,
To be a role model to those I would teach
In Sunday school classes to aid our outreach.
I sought to be worthy of Jesus' great love
And prayed earnestly to the heavens above
For more things to do that would guarantee me
A home with Him for eternity.
I visited nursing homes, hoping to bring
Some solace and smiles as I asked them to sing
The hymns they had learned at their church in years past
And now had a chance to re-sing them, at last.
I helped at the car-wash the youth group had planned
To pay for their fun trip to famed Disneyland.
I helped paint the parsonage, trimmed every hedge,
Increased the size of my missionary pledge.
Exhausted from trying salvation to earn
I opened my Bible, just hoping to learn
If there was still something that I could still do
To make me acceptable, something brand new.
When all of a sudden,my fingers ceased to move.
It seemed like they might have found something to prove.
Salvation is free! It's a gift from above
From One who created you to show His great love.
All glory to Jesus! I now have been set free.
I'm promised a home for eternity.
I don't have to work for it, all I must do
Is trust Him as Savior, my life is brand new.
