While Mother watched me from our white front door.
I'd stand on tiptoe, stretching high for my first glimpse of him,
Though I was small and barely had turned four.
Daddy labored hard to feed his seven boys and girls
By working on the Lehigh Valley train.
In summer's heat and winter's chill he laid the iron tracks,
But never once did I hear him complain.
He always walked to work and back, and every day at three,
I'd jump and scream when his dear frame I'd see.
He'd drop his lunch pail, scoop me up, and hug me, oh, so tight,
I felt he'd squeeze the very life from me.
His work clothes always smelled of soot from working on the rails.
His tired face was streaked with dirt and sweat.
But nothing could distract me while I kissed that precious face.
I wanted all the loving I could get.
The first thing Daddy wanted when we reached our home at last,
Was just to lie in comfort in his tub.
Then, squeaky-clean and in fresh clothes that Mother brought to him,
He'd touch his back and ask her for a rub.
Standing on the corner, oh, the years flew by so fast.
Now Daddy was the one who waited there.
He longed to see this daughter who had been away at school.
His loneliness was more than he could bear.
He waited on the corner when I brought my beau back home
To ask my dad if he could marry me.
He gave to us his blessing and the wedding date was set.
He felt the man I chose was meant to be.
Dad stood there on the corner so he'd be the first to see
Our son who blessed our lives since first he came.
We drove across the country so that Daddy'd get to hold
The grandson who was sharing daddy's name.
Standing on the corner; I preferred to be alone
As Daddy's body passed me in the hearse.
My heart was crushed and broken and I simply couldn't think
How anything could possibly be worse.
Now Daddy's on the corner, where he paces back and forth,
He wants to be the first to welcome me.
Surrounded by my mother and by all my siblings there
In heaven where my spirit longs to be.
