I watch the children play,
Constructing castles out of sand
For tides to wash away.
When castles crumble, off they run
On sandy, sunburned feet.
They’re laughing, shouting, having fun,
Regardless of the heat.
I hear repeated rolling waves
With never a cessation,
While high above, the squawking geese
Go flying in formation.
At games of volleyball, the youth,
So sleek and slim and tanned,
Contrast with white haired couples who
Are strolling hand in hand.
On crested caps of white, I spy
The sparkle of sun’s rays,
And in the distance, sailing ships,
Through ocean’s salt-drenched haze.
While searching for the suntan oil,
I’m all at once aware
I’m not beneath a beach umbrella,
But home and in my chair.
I’ve traveled back across the years
In snoozing reverie,
And all that I experienced
Was from my memory.
I reach for glass of sweet iced tea
And think about the shore,
Then nod and nap, and in my dreams,
I go to sea once more.
