Mr. Wonka! What are you doing here?
Looking for you, my boy! And here, you are, basking in the sauna at the Country Club.
Well, yes, I am. Why, it’s been years. I thought…
What did you think?
I didn’t know what to think. You gave me the factory, my family and I moved in, and then you said you were off to see the world.
I did see the world, Charlie. And it was wonderful. And everywhere I went, I heard of your success. You’ve become famous, my boy!
Why, yes. It's all thanks to you, Mr. Wonka.
No thanks necessary. But, Charlie, I wonder if I could ask a favor of you?
Anything, Mr. Wonka! After all, I owe my fortune to you.
Seeing the world was a marvelous thing, Charlie. But I realized there is nothing quite like the joy of making chocolates. So, I’d like to come to work at the factory, if you’ll have me.
You want to work at my factory?
Yes, I do. I really do.
But, Mr. Wonka… I don’t know how to tell you this…. but the candy isn’t made by people.
Not made by people? How is that possible??
It’s all automated. I use machines and drones.
But, Charlie? Surely the Oompa Loompas are still there?
No, I’m afraid not. They got an offer to join a road company of the Wizard of Oz, and they all quit.
Oh, my gracious! And… what about Grandpa Joe?
He passed away a few years ago. It was a shame. He just couldn’t stay away from those Fizzy Lifting Drinks.
How unfortunate.
Yes, it was a real problem getting him down from the ceiling.
I can imagine. But, Charlie. No people? But… what about the joy?
What joy?
The joy of making candy, of course.
Oh, gosh, Mr. Wonka. That got old real fast. It’s hard work, making those chocolates. But, of course; you know that.
Yes, but it was worth it to me.
I do appreciate it, Mr. Wonka, but I found it was easier, after a time, to use the automation.
But what do you do, all day? Sit here in the sauna?
Of course not. I golf. I own race horses. And I dabble in real estate.
I see. Well. Candy... not made by people. Well, all right. I guess I’ll go back to Belgium, then. They still make chocolates by hand there. Surely someone there will give me a job.
I should hope so, Mr. Wonka.
Well, Charlie. I’ll be off again. May your life be full of sweetness!
Thanks, Mr. Wonka. I’m sure it will. I’m in negotiations to buy a new shopping mall. That’ll be sweet.
Sweet. Yes. Goodbye, Charlie.
Goodbye, Mr. Wonka.
