It was an interesting afternoon all the way around, and quite challenging to keep the children occupied during the event. The centerpiece seemed to hold all of the little ones attention. It was a huge display of colored M & M's specially made for the function.
The M & M's had letters emblazoned from A through Z. In addition, some had numbers. They looked really inviting, and of course, were in a variety of colors, some of which I hadn't seen before.
After the early dinner, while waiting for coffee and cake to be served, Angie, a nine year old golden haired little beauty, turned to me and asked. "Can I take some of those M & M's out right now?"
I answered with a disclaimer. "If your parents are okay with it, I am too! Besides, I want some as well."
She giggled and nodded her head, then started digging out the yummy treats. At first I thought maybe she was going to share with the others, hence the reason for the huge scoops.
I was momentarily distracted with other church members who had stopped by to say hello. When I turned back to Angie, I was mesmerized by her behavior. She continued to systematically take the M & M's by the cupful until she finally stopped scooping them out.
What she did next was extraordinarily powerful. She opened her napkin and placed it on the table, then began arranging the M & M's in a row. At first, I thought it was just a little girl playing and having fun. Perhaps, it was a little bit of playing, but it was something more than that, something bigger, and more significant than playing.
She paused, and stared at me with her huge blue eyes, and then asked, in a tiny voice, ”Is that right? I'm trying really hard."
"Yes" was all I managed to say having been taken off guard and not being prepared for what I saw. I looked at the arrangement of M & M's on the napkin, taking it all in.
For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son. John 3 16.
And underneath the first row another verse, and behold I am with you always to the end of the age Matthew 28:20
And finally, I love Jesus because He loves me the Bible tells me so
I smiled as the words became blurry through tears about to spill, so touched was I by this little doll who had a heart for God in earnest. Instead of eating the candy, like most children, and adults would, here she was arranging Bible verses, while declaring her love for Jesus.
The rest of the group at our table was long gone. They took off running, and playing, as most children invariably do. Yet, this one stayed behind, and found great pleasure, and sheer delight, in arranging candy for God!
I was moved beyond description.
I felt God's presence and love so intensely at that moment through this little innocent young lady and her outward display of her inner light.
I knew without a doubt that God had very special plans for her life...
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. Mark 10:15 KJV
