I'm so sorry I wasn't able to warn you of your impending doom, but it all happened so fast. First you were there, and then you were... well... dead. Just a smear of slime on the road. And no one even stopped to see if you were okay. Well, I mean, I tried, but I've seen the outcome of "snail vs. car" too many times. It never ends well for the snail. Never. I wouldn't have gotten there in time anyway. By the time I finally made it to the side of the road, you were already in Pond Heaven. If only you'd seen that SUV.
I hope you like it up there, and that there are lots of other toads for you to play with. And frogs, and turtles, and all sorts of other pond dwellers. I'm not sure what you're going to eat up there, since nothing dies in heaven. But I suppose you don't have to eat up there. You're just always satisfied.
I remember the day we first met. You were there on a lily pad, and I was there on the side of the pond. All my friends had left me behind, because even amongst snails, I am a snail. But you didn't seem to mind. You'd hop ahead, and wait for me to squirm along and catch up, leaving my smears of slime behind me, then you'd hop ahead again. You even tried to give me a toady back ride once, but that didn't end up working so well. You hopped so high and so fast that I flew off your back. Man, that's the fastest I've ever traveled. And I'm sorry I slimed on you.
You were so resilient, too. When the other pond creatures made fun of your warts, you didn't care. You held your head high and didn't let it get you down.
I'll miss your croaking. And I don't mean that in the morbid way. I mean I'll miss your singing and the sound of your voice.
I'll miss our not so long... walks? No. Journeys? No, more like... treks around the pound. Slow but steady wins the race, right?
Pond life just won't be the same without you. It's not nearly as fun to call the mudskippers "pond scum" without you. Now they just laugh at me, because they're faster than I am.
You were my best friend, Tom. I know a friendship between a toad and a snail isn't normal, but we had something special.
For now, I'll just have to be content with all our happy memories. And the next smear of slime I leave behind? That's for you, Tom.
See you on the other side of the pond.
Yours Slowly,
Sam the Snail.
