“Should we add a blush of crimson for the sun’s reflective rays?” his brush poised in midair.
“Oh, yes, and just a tincture of pink combined with violet!”
The masterpiece continued to take form for several more hours, but the hands were not tired. Like a music conductor’s supple, flowing movements, the arms continued to sweep over the massive canvas. It was exciting, this act of creating such a majestic scene. As day stepped on the heels of night, the colors faded into somber splatters of ebony and smoky charcoal spread haphazardly in broad swipes across the canopy of celestial spheres above.
“It is too dark, though; it needs a kind of contrast. . .”
The artist dipped a clean brush, tipped with paint like a perfumed arrow, into a translucent mix of glassy fluid that was brighter than the moving clouds he had arranged into fluffy cotton balls earlier. He threw dollops off the end of his brush into the black velvet blanket umbrella-ing earth with studied abandon, arranging each speck into glittering droplets of constellations and twinkling stars, gleaming pointy lamps and chandeliers, to decorate night’s background.
God’s imagination defying human understanding, He painted our world into existence with unmatchable grace and beauty. Every grain of sand on a beach, every fragrant flower, every sprouting plant, every blade of grass has been created and smeared with drops of rainbow colors and shading of every hue imaginable. Every leaf hanging from its tree branch, every rock, stone or shell, each wave crashing from its ocean, is unique and different. Not one living thing is identical within His realm, daubed with color and shape from His infinite vision. Each fish in the sea, every bird flying so free, every animal roaming the earth, any baby ever born—has been created and autographed by Him as unique within itself.
Human talented artists attempt to copy what He has made, but none can compare to the real thing, that which the Great Creator has spun from nothing into something. He instinctively knew that a world without color, without individuality, without depth or dimension would be boring, a black and white flat, unembellished universe of sameness as tasteless and bland as a saltless cracker. The artists of today are limited to much smaller easels to make their renditions of still-lifes and give us beautiful works of art that grace museum walls and murals of graffiti appear on walls of our city sidewalks and alleys, all smudged with blended colors from the craftsmen’s visual perceptions of individuality. But none can compare to nature’s offerings gifted to us by God Himself.
Next time you see a rainbow appearing in the sky—representing one of His promises to us—picture Him with each of his fingers a separate paint brush, dripping with the colors He spreads them across the sky.
