“Hope, he’s wonderful. I’ve never met anyone quite like him. He’s loving and caring, and he makes me feel alive inside. He’s there when I need him and he loves me for who I am.”
Hope stared at her friend in disbelief. “Oh, no,” she rolled her eyes. “Tell me you’re not serious.”
“I am” she said intently.
Hope would never understand the depth of longing, the hole in her heart that he filled.
“But Faith, you’re married!”
Faith thought about her life with Henry. It seemed cold and listless. Sure, he was a good provider, but the spark was gone. Then again, where would she be without Henry? Perhaps she should just run back to him and embrace the emptiness.
“I know,” she whispered. She fidgeted with her cup as she eyed Hope’s kitchen tile. “I still love Henry, but …” her voice trailed off.
Hope looked intently into her eyes. “Does Henry know?”
Faith bit her lip. “I’m not sure,” she said. “I know what Henry would do if he found out, but…I’m not sure I care.”
“You don’t mean that,” Hope protested.
“No, I do. It sounds crazy, but I’m a better person when I’m with him. I’m happier, more alive.”
Hope grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her. “Are you listening to yourself, Faith? You’ve got to come to your senses now, before it’s too late.”
Faith grabbed her purse and headed for the door, a faraway look in her eye. “Yeah, you’re right,” she mumbled. “Thanks, Hope.”
Faith had no intention of breaking off the relationship, but she really didn’t know what to do. For the first time in her life she felt vibrant, complete… whole.
She drove aimlessly through town. As the sun’s rays began to fade, she came to a crossroad.
Right turn leads home; left turn leads to him.
She sat at the stop sign for what seemed like an eternity. Then she hit her blinker and turned left.
She thought about Henry. Would he leave her if he ever found out? Or do worse than that? It didn’t matter. Faith had already made up her mind. She was determined to see this through.
She drove a little faster now, as she crossed the town line.
As her speed increased, however, so did her doubts. What if this doesn’t work out? What if he decides to leave? Would he judge her with respect to her past? To lose her new love and her husband was more than she could bear.
She turned onto his street.
She worked up her courage as she drove closer, pushing down the bile that was rising in her throat. No turning back now.
She pulled up into the drive.
She parked her car and headed for the door, when something caught her eye. She stopped in her tracks, frozen in horror, when she saw it in the shadows.
Henry’s car.
She almost turned to run, but she steadied herself, and pressed toward the door. It was unlocked. Slowly, she turned the knob and crept in. In the rear of the house, she could hear a faint conversation. She headed down the hall. Behind a set of double doors, she could hear Henry yelling loudly.
“Jesus!”
She burst open the doors to find Henry kneeling at the front of the sanctuary, tears streaming down his face. Pastor Frank was pressed in close, hands on Henry’s shoulders, feeding him the gospel and encouraging him to cry out to Jesus for salvation. Her mouth hung open for a moment before she caught herself and slipped into a chair silently. She wept as she listened to Henry repent and ask Jesus to come into his heart.
She approached as Henry stood up and embraced him. She began to speak, but Henry cut her off.
“I’m sorry Faith. A friend of mine said he thought he saw your car here last week. I was suspicious and was sure you were having an affair. When I showed up, Pastor Frank introduced himself and told me he had recently started this home church. I realized I was wrong, and I listened to what he had to say.
They stood, hand in hand, as they basked in the peace and love of His presence. Henry now knew the thrill of true love that Faith had come to know. As members shuffled in, they took a seat, both of them grateful for a fresh start.
