My darling mother-in-law reached up and plucked one perfectly ripe specimen from a tree and within seconds had it peeled and ready to consume. She leaned over to keep any stray succulent juice from landing on her shirt. I was mesmerized by the simplicity of the whole event. It was pure art.
The whole experience, so familiar to those who grew up around orange groves, was foreign to someone raised a little further north of Florida. I couldn’t wait to try. First, I had to delete all former rules about sticky hands and other stay-clean table manners taught from childhood.
I will never forget standing under that tree laden with its healthy, sweet harvest. I reached up and pulled gently on a plump piece of citrus until it let go of its source of life and yielded to my hunger. Within seconds, I was happily eating with natural abandon while its warm, sweet juice rolled down my unconcerned chin.
In retrospect, those few dazzling minutes, warmed by the sun and covered with blue sky, were filled with metaphors that occurred to me years later. God provided another kind of fruit to delight and nourish us when we surrender to the Holy Spirit.
Spiritual sustenance that is delectable and sustaining hangs on the tree of life whose branches are laden with peace, love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
How sweet is that?
