“Don't get your hopes up too much, honey. We're here on a special discount deal. Our room's likely the smallest one, out the back,” said Guy.
“Next please,” called the man behind the desk, and they stepped forward to check in.
“Welcome to the Grand Imperial Hotel, sir, madam. What name?”
“Smith, Guy Smith.” Guy fished in his bag for their coupon.
“Oh, Mr and Mrs Smith, we have your booking right here. No need to show us anything. The concierge will take you right up to your room. Enjoy your stay.”
Becky grabbed Guy's hand as the concierge called a porter to carry their bags and then led them to the lift. Their wedding anniversary was going to be a great celebration. They had saved for this weekend away and searched the internet for a bargain deal. And here they were, in Surfers Paradise, ready for a wonderful time.
“Your room is on the twenty fourth floor. I'm sure you'll be very pleased with the view we've chosen for you,” explained the concierge as he pressed the button in the lift. Becky looked at Guy, but he just shrugged. It sounded too good to be true.
“Room 2401. This is your room.” The man opened the door, ushered them in and left them to marvel at the enormous room before them. This was a penthouse!
“What did you book for us, Guy? You said it was a special deal, but how could this have cost only $100 a night?”
“Well, it did! I'm flabbergasted too, Beck. But, hey, let's enjoy it. Look there's a bottle of champagne, and chocolates.”
“And a view! Guy just come and look. We've got a view over the marina and the beach. This is amazing”
The next day was pure delight—walks on the beach, romantic meals, and relaxing in their luxurious hotel room. But all too soon it was Sunday and time to head home.
“This notice says we have a late check-out included, so let's take our time. We'd better make the most of our last morning here, before we head back to our little everyday-life home.” Becky was propped up the super-king-size bed sipping a topical smoothie, part of their hand-delivered breakfast. Guy sat at the window watching boats moving out of the marina and people running on the beach.
“I don't know how we got this amazing room and all the extras but it's sure been fun. Better get packed up though. It's eleven o'clock.”
Slowly they packed their cases, stopping now and then to look again at the view and to give one another a hug. They wheeled their cases to the lift and were soon stepping out into the marble foyer. The concierge rushed to them.
“Mr Smith, Mrs Smith, you should have rung for assistance.” He beckoned to a porter as they headed to the counter to check out.
A man was speaking loudly, gesticulating wildly. “I expect better from the Grand Imperial. My room was tiny and our only view was a brick wall. I know I arrived a day late, and at midnight, but I expect my usual type of room. You have just lost my business. Not only that, but the Smith Emporium will no longer use this hotel for its conferences, or for its staff accommodation.”
“Mr Smith, I'm so sorry. There's been a dreadful mistake. Your room was given to another Mr Smith. It was our new staff; they don't know you, and they got completely mixed up.”
“No excuse!” stormed Mr Smith, and he turned and walked out the door.
Guy and Becky timidly approached the desk. That explained their good fortune, but what would happen? What about the bill?
“Mr and Mrs Smith, do you understand what has happened here? You have enjoyed a $2000 a night room at the expense of the Smith Emporium, thanks to some of our incompetent staff. We can't charge you for it as it was our mistake. I do hope you enjoyed your stay.
“Oh, we certainly did,” Becky said. “And what a story to tell!!”
