You were right. Living in the country is nothing like living in New York City. I feel like I’m in another world – not a hundred miles from home. The worst thing is getting used to all the noise at night. With no air conditioner, I’ve got to leave the window open. There’s some kind of chirping creature that just goes on and on forever! Then every night, a mosquito finds its way past the screen and buzzes around my ears.
Uncle Bob and Aunt Betty are treating me like a queen. They took me on a ride around town to see the sights – the Henry Hudson monument in the park, the ice cream shop, and the new movie theater. It's all quaint. I may even try to be a farm girl and do the things a country girl would do. I get to ride their horse every day and gather the eggs.
I’ve enclosed a few photos of interesting things. There are numbers on the backs so you can match them to my descriptions.
1. This is Uncle Bob and Aunt Betty. They don’t usually dress up this nice, especially Uncle Bob. They only wore these clothes to the bus station to pick me up. Normally, they both wear denim overalls and work boots. (I think I over-packed.)
2. This is my room. It’s cozy and has a nice view, but even with the window open, it’s like a cramped subway car in July.
3. Speaking of being hot, this is where Aunt Betty cooks – even in the middle of the summer. I didn’t know they still made fire stoves. Uncle Bob cooks his coffee in a bubbler pot. By late afternoon, it’s quite thick and hearty. He says it will put hair on my chest. That’s a good enough reason for me to only drink the freshly made stuff in the morning.
4. Here’s the toilet – the outdoor one. (I also have a pot under my bed to use at night.) This outside one’s not too bad – if I don’t let my imagination get the best of me. Uncle Bob says Aunt Betty is spoiling me. He never saw anyone sweep a privy or fancy it up with flowers.
5. I’m not sure what this photo is supposed to be. I think there’s a bird or squirrel in those leaves somewhere. I never knew there were so many trees. I don’t wander too far, for fear I’ll get lost.
6. This is Hattie, the old black hen. Can you see her glaring at me? She hates when I take her eggs. I’ve got scars all over my hand from her sharp beak.
7. Here’s the old windmill – well, half of it. It makes me dizzy to look up at it spinning around.
8. (Excuse the next few photos. There is farm poop everywhere, but I found it fascinating that a person could tell which animal made it by how it looks. )

9. Cow pile (stinky pudding)
10. Goat doo-doos (dried dates)
11. Gray chicken splatters on the back steps. (You’ve got to take off your boots at the door.)
12. Ha Ha! This is a close-up of the pig’s nose. He got curious just as I snapped the camera.
13. Here’s the barn loft full of hay. I itch all over. My back hurts; my arms hurt; my feet hurt, but Uncle Bob reminded me that I wanted to be a country girl. We cooled off in the pond.
14. That bump in the middle of the pond is a frog. I found out that the frogs are the creatures keeping me awake at night . . . and a whippoorwill. (I might miss that when I come home.)
15. This is Uncle Bob playing his fiddle and dancing at the same time. (sorry it’s so blurry) I thought I’d get bored in the country, but by the time supper’s done and Aunt Betty and I wash the dishes, I’m ready to hit the hay – as Uncle Bob says.
You were right. There’s nothing like the old farm – definitely better than getting lost Boston with my friends. I should have brought them with me. Oh, the fun we could’ve had together! Although, I don’t think they would’ve enjoyed it as much as I did.
