in the raging river where she walks
a stepping stone of safe passage
that keeps her from sinking
She is the quiet testing ground
of his working words and dreams
a foundation where his confidence
takes root before he goes
He is the balm that soothes her fears
in the daily throng of toil
a healing warmth of sympathy
that fixes many hurtful wrongs
She is the tenor harmony
to his low sung composition
the playful tripping sixteenth notes
to his plodding steady beat
He is the sand paper, making smooth
her youthful rough exterior
a help in rounding out the corners
and defining shining years
She is the lifelong major question
the test he didn't study for
a constant pleasant learning curve
he knows he'll never master
He is the boy he always was
making everything a game
making sure they have some fun
or she'd be too serious
She is the majestic cathedral
where his prayers are always answered
the alter where he lays his fears
and folds his hands in peace
Theirs is a love that multiplied
a raucous garden of tender shoots
that climbed into their hearts
to safely grow before they go
Theirs is the star spangled anthem
that waves above the family
and represents a hard won fight
against the worldly way
Theirs is the starry, starry night
that signals work is at a close
thankful for the rest and yet
they'd do it all again.
