John 20:1-8
Could not my Lord who calmed the sea
and brought still calm to Galilee
have stilled the wicked cursing breath
that culminated in His death?
Oh, could not He who healed the blind,
the lame, the dumb, the sickened mind,
be conqueror in the evil hour
when sin was victor in cruel power?
Could not the angel hosts on high
storm from each corner of the sky
to liberate, rescue and free
His dying form from Calvary?
Could He who banished misery
and set sad hearts at liberty
come to my aching heart today
and shed His light with quick’ning ray?
I run the path with hasty tread,
the questions tumbling in my head
each ‘Why’ and ‘’How’ that I retrace
echoes with every onward pace.
The tomb is open – gaping wide –
why has the stone been rolled aside?
dare I stoop low? dare I go in?
dare I begin to hope again?
I see the grave clothes folded neat
that once enclosed His hands, His feet,
His head, His lifeless body. How? -
I need not ask, t’is all clear now.
I see, I understand, I believe,
He’s risen. I know that He did leave
this tomb, He’s victor o’er the grave,
death had no power to Him enslave.
My heart with joy is quiet and still,
I rest in His revealing Will
All doubting questions to ignore,
He is alive forever more.
