Day 1 – 205 pounds
The Newcastle Slimmers has 15 members, 12 women and 3 men. The meetings last only ninety minutes. Thirty minutes to weigh in. Thirty minutes for a pep talk and thirty minutes to hand out the prize money.
Membership costs $3 a week.
My doctor has told me to lose 40 pounds.
Day 8 – 203 pounds
I’ve lost 2lbs.
Hooray for me!
I also won $5 for being the biggest loser in my category.
Day 15 – 205 pounds
I put the 2lbs back on.
So I had to sit through the pep talk wearing a red sash for all to see.
The pep talk tonight was about a new website, Calorie King dot com. It is a calorie control program. I’m desperate enough to try it.
Day 22 – 200 pounds
Calorie King is working. But it means I have to register everything I eat and take up some form of exercise. Stephen Fry was on the telly tonight. He lost 60 pounds in one year power walking. I’ll give it a try.
Day 113 – 187 pounds
I have slowly built up my exercise regime. It started with a walk around the block. Now I can manage 5 miles a day. My blood pressure is down and I am losing a small amount of weight each week.
Day 134 - 185 pounds
My weight loss has plateaued and I am feeling very frustrated. Walking and counting calories isn’t working. I’m reading “Factor X” by Dr K. She claims we need to find the missing ingredient in our diet. I did the 3 page questionnaire and it said I need to boost my serotonin levels. I am now on the banana peel diet.
Day 141 – 183 pounds
The banana peels are working! However I am not winning on a weekly basis. Vera is on the liver detox diet. Judy is having meal replacement drinks. Tina is on the protein diet. Keith has joined a gym.
The club does not promote a specific diet. It just hands out prize money to the biggest losers.
Day 169 – 182 pounds
Tonight was my turn to give the pep talk. I gave a book review about a man who lost 100 pounds through self hypnosis. He slept with a tape running beside his bed. “It is safe to be thin. It is safe to be thin.” The book argues that we hide behind fat which insulates us against life's shocks.
Fifteen people turned up. Half the audience sat with arms folded and deep frowns. What a cynical lot!
Day 246 – 177 pounds
Tonight we held our Annual Slimmers Prize Night. First prize was $150. I came second! No one was more shocked then me.
I lost 28 pound over 8 months. Vera lost 32 pounds and gave the credit to a detox program that cured her fatty liver.
When I accepted the trophy and the $50 prize I had no idea what to say. The only thing that came to mind was, “I deserve this!” Eventually I found something more appropriate to say.
“Thank you so much for your help. I only did three things differently this year. I walked 5 miles a day, rain, hail or shine. I counted my calories and I came to meetings.
The meetings were half the battle. My father once told me, ‘Choose your friends carefully, because your friends will choose the man you become.”
My blood pressure is down, I have more energy and my wife says I look great. Thank you again.”
12 pounds to go!
