Shame became my shadow,
Guilt like heavy chains,
Hypocrisy, a cloud o'er me,
For I confessed Your name.
Caught between my two desires
I never lived in peace,
My flesh had gained the upper hand,
My soul longed for release.
Trapped, I did not want to go,
And yet flesh still gave in,
Peace no longer reigned in me
Because of all my sin.
Confession would bring victory,
And then would come a fall,
This prodigal kept coming back
When I heard heaven's call.
Pleading for forgiveness,
I felt Your hand on me,
For Your love never once gave up,
You had a hold on me.
Your loving mercy drew me back,
Your arms have held me there,
I never want to flee again
Or cause so much despair.
In Your eyes I'm forgiven,
Clean before the throne,
It was Your love that drew me back,
No power of my own.
Your mercies new each morning,
And gratefully I sing
Because this soul is clean again
My praises I will bring.
Your Spirit had a hold on me,
And He conviction brought,
Your love and mercy so much more
Than any man e'er thought.
