“It’s mine,” he said.
Kensi reared her leg back and gave her twin brother a swift kick.
“Ow!” The boy dropped the ball and grabbed hold of his knee. “Mommy,” he howled.
The girl gave him a mischievous look then grabbed the ball. Kensi skipped down the sidewalk and sang, “Davie, Davie, he’s a baby.” Her group of friends surrounded her and soon a game of four-square began.
“David, Private I,” the twin spoke into his pretend tape recorder. “I’m tailing the Wicked-Kensi, daughter of the Evil-Lock-Jawed-Monster.” He ducked down behind bushes and hid up against trees. He looked around to make sure no one watched before he lifted his shirt and wiped his runny nose. He never could figure out how Private I’s took care of such matters.
He poked his head up to get a better look. “The Evil-Crones circle around Wicked-Kensi. Listen to them.” He stuck his hand out to record the sounds. Of course, all the group of friends saw was Davie’s empty hand.
“Davie, Davie, he’s a baby,” they chorused together.
David moved toward the group. He stood, chest out and declared, “Am not,” but they didn’t listen. The group of four ignored the boy as they hit the ball into the squares. David stealthily tip-toed to them, caught the ball in mid-air, and ran like crazy.
In one hand he held the coveted ball, and in the other, his invisible tape recorder. He whispered into it, “I took it back but I know pain will be coming again soon. My purpose: get to my kitchen so there are witnesses.” He stopped a second to look behind him.
Kensi caught up to him. “Davie, whatcha doing? You can’t go stealing the ball. It’s my day. Your day was yesterday, remember?”
“Wicked-Kensi, you will never win, no matter what day it is.”
“Okay Buddy, I’m not Wicked-Kensi. That’s you and dad’s made-up junk and I play along. If Mom sees me beating you up like this she’ll spank me and then we’ll both be hurting. You want that?”
“You’re nothing without your Evil-Crones who surround us.”
Kensi wrapped her arm around his scrawny neck and pulled him close so no one could hear. “Listen, Bro, you’re weird. It’s okay at home but not in front of friends. Got it?”
David pushed away. “I’ll never approve of your evil plans, Wicked-Kensi. Give up now and I’ll allow you to live.”
“Shut up now and I’ll let YOU live, Davie-the-Weak.” She knocked him to the ground and sat on his stomach.
“Owwww! Kensssss, not so hard. You’re heavy.”
“We don’t have to play together all the time, Davie. You have your own friends and mine might like you if you were normal. You can play with us. Wanna?”
By this time the ball rolled away, ignored by all except an adult driving down the street. The Evil-Crones heard tires squeal and ran: the twins were left alone to deal with the consequences.
“Kensi, David – over here, now,” the stern voice of their dad got their attention fast.
Kensi helped her brother off the ground. Davie put his arm around his sister and they both walked to the side of the road.
“Hi Dad. What’s up?” they chimed together with sweet nine-year-old voices.
“That’s what I’d like to know. Why can’t you two get along anymore?”
Kensi looked at Davie. She spit on her hand and wiped dirt off his face.
Davie jerked away quick. “Gross. You’re as bad as mom.”
“See, we love each other Dad, don’t know what you’re talking about. We’re just goofing off. Right, Davie?”
“David, call me David, Kens.”
“Gonna quit calling me Wicked-Kensi then?”
“No way. We can’t quit the game. Please? Dad? You started it. Tell her, please?”
Tim looked at his twin charmers and knew he was caught in a problem of his own doing. “Davie, ummm… David, you’re both getting older now. Can’t you work this out together?”
“Dad, I told him only at home. My friends don’t get all this imagination stuff.”
“Playing only at home sounds fair, Son. But you know what? The Evil-Crones are gone now.” Tim spread his pretend wings and said, “The Winged-Warrior-of-all-that-is-Right-and-Fair is here. Care to play, Wicked-Kensi, Daughter-of Evil-Locked-Jawed-Monster?”
“Dad,” the twins chorused.
“She’s standing behind me, isn’t she?”
Shelley punched her husband in the arm.
“Ow! Your Evilness, as always, wins in the end, Honey.”
“Better remember that, Buddy.”
