A covert figure lurched,
Clutched in his hands an auction bill,
Then nailed it to a church.
His plan was simple, basically
To lure the saints astray
With promises of wealth and things –
To have it all today.
As meeting closed parishioners
Were headed to their cars,
Then paused to read the auction bill,
“For sale: Bridge to the Stars.”
“Why postpone prosperity
For with no money down,
Bypass the ladder, have success,
A short-cut to renown.”
Celestial images described,
Enticing words that awed,
“Envisage: Paradise awaits
Where you can be a god.”
Scrawled in fine print, “The price is small,
A bridge to fortune’s shoals.
So keep your silver and your gold,
We only deal in souls.”
One mortal stayed to read, transfixed,
Lured by the pledged success,
Desire to acquire the bridge
And riches to possess.
His mortal mind, once heard the Word,
Thoughts of the bridge invaded.
Choked like the seed that fell by thorns,
Though once, almost persuaded.
A soul sold out, then crossed the bridge,
Despite the Word’s fair warning.
A sepulchral laugh resounded
In murky shadow’s mourning.
