It was almost time for his nightly rounds.
He pasted down his trollish hair
And flipped his tail through the air.
His beady eyes opened just a slit
His teeth all black and little bits.
His greenish skin had lots of warts
His attitude--out of sorts.
“A rewarding night, I hope this be,
Finding treasure just for me.
I hope those humans pass me by
So I can surely make them cry!
“Human happiness makes me mad
For trolls don’t like them to be glad.
What right have they to be so cheerful?
I like it better when they are fearful.”
York left his bed in the hollow rock
Trudged to the bridge where he would block
All passersby, he’d scare them away
Or steal their treasures for traveling pay.
The night was cold, the sky dark black
York sat hidden, wished for a snack,
A man approached, his arms half full
With chicken eggs and walnut hulls.
Old York jumped out to grab the man
Scaring and stealing was his plan,
“The eggs will fill my empty tummy
The hulls will make my bed just yummy.”
The scared man fled at York’s loud roar,
Dropped eggs and hulls, and said, “They’re yours!”
He ran as fast as he could go
And left his treasures with the troll.
York ate the eggs and kept an eye
For other ones to pass him by
The cold dark night quickly fled,
It was nearly time to head for bed.
Trolls can’t be out past the dawn
He must be home when dark is gone,
Or he will turn into hard stone,
Never more will he be known.
About the time to leave the bridge
A lad walked up across the ridge.
With little time to scare the tot
He grabbed the boy’s handheld box.
The wee one stopped and quietly stood
As the troll ripped opened the box of wood.
How disappointed he was to find
A big black book, silver lined.
“What is this?” he asked the boy,
“That’s my Bible,” he replied with joy.
“Don’t you know I am a troll?”
“That’s okay, Jesus saved your soul.”
York was confused, there was no fear,
The boy just smiled, full of cheer,
And began to speak of one named Jesus.
Who came from heav’n to save and free us.
York watched the sky turn black to gray
As he listened to the boy explain the way
To happiness, peace, getting along with others,
No more scaring or stealing from another.
Daylight shined, Old York felt stiff
He couldn’t smell, not even a whiff.
His tail grew firm, his skin hard as bone
Old York, the troll, had turned to stone.
His mind inside a body of steel
Could only think but could not feel.
He thought of what the boy just said,
And called out to Jesus, how he pled.
“Jesus, take my heart of stone
I give You all of me to own,
I ask You for a heart of flesh,
Change me, mold me, make me fresh.”
He felt warmth swell deep in his heart
As Jesus granted him a brand new start.
His skin grew warm, his tail gave a shake,
His warty green body began to awake.
A smile took over his once rigid face
Then a huge, silly grin fell into place.
A full belly laugh began to emerge,
As his troll heart and mind was being purged.
York changed his ways that glorious dawn
His heart of spite and stone now gone.
He sits each day at the bridge’s side
To help people pass and be their guide.
His heart of flesh beats with brotherly love
A gift from Jesus, in heaven above.
If you see Old York, the happy troll,
You’ll know Jesus saved his treasured soul.
