Sadie Jean entered the world.
She looked around the room
At all of the strange faces
One by one...
Are you my daddy?
Sadie Jean turned four today.
Her mother took her to a local pizza place
To celebrate.
It was very crowded
Too many people to count…
Could one of them be my daddy?
A stranger came over tonight.
He slept in her mother’s bed
And made Sadie Jean pancakes for breakfast.
He seemed nice,
Nicer than the others.
Maybe he can be my daddy.
On the day she turned ten
Sadie Jean had a beautiful cake
With pink frosting and ten candles.
“Make a wish, Sadie Jean!”
She blew with all her might.
I wish I had a daddy…
The invitation was in her hand.
“Come to a father/daughter banquet.”
Sadie Jean let go of the paper
And it fell to the ground
She burst into tears.
I have no daddy!
A boy kissed her
Sadie Jean was seduced by his affection.
Maybe if she gave him what he wanted
He would stick around -
At least for a while.
Unlike my daddy…
Sadie Jean woke up this morning
in another man’s bed.
He lay sleeping
right beside her
But she had never felt more alone.
Would I be here if I had a daddy?
Walking down the street
On a rainy afternoon.
A church choir was singing
Sadie Jean was drawn in
She swayed to the music.
Did they say something about daddy?
“He loves you, Sadie Jean…
He’ll never leave you…
If you let Him into your heart
He will be your daddy.
He longs to be your daddy.”
I’ve never had a daddy…
Cheeks wet with tears.
Heart filled with peace,
Sadie Jean looked up
And offered her heart.
He took it. Held it. Healed it.
I love you, daddy…

As a teacher I've seen too many girls like Sadie Jean. As a father of two daughters, they are the reasons that I do everything I can so they don't end up like Sadie Jean.
