As a warning;
I must shield my eyes
Lest I provoke evil.
My beauty is a curse,
So I wrap my veil
Secure
And hide my face.
Only my eyes are exposed;
Ebony almonds
With curled lashes.
Careful to look down.
How I’d love to spin
And spin and spin
And unravel like a spool of thread,
But I might feel bare
And want to wrap again
In the comfort
Of cool cotton silk fabric,
Draped in my favorite color,
Pale turquoise
Of an endless sky.
At the market,
A woman approached me,
And told me I am loved,
Words I haven’t heard
Since my youth.
She risked her life
With these words
About Jesus
On her lips
In public.
I want to believe
In this love…
That God could love me
Enough to die for me,
To believe
I was created,
Equal
With a purpose.
She compliments my abaya
And wears a covering too,
But tells me
To get to heaven
We must clothe
Ourselves in
His forgiveness;
All our hidden sins
Are exposed
In His eyes,
But we can
Be clothed
In His spirit
If we believe.
I may never see
This woman again
But her words
Won’t leave my heart.
My eyes look up,
Exposed
To the truth
And it’s beautiful.
