Fame was accompanied by an entourage of friends and followers. She was a gracious host as she basked in the attention of her party and acknowledged the acclamations of passersby. Infamy, surrounded by bodyguards, hiked up her skirt as she swiveled around on her stool. Her glares dared gawkers to approach. Obscurity mildly observed it all from her solitary corner.
Fame enjoyed a charmed life and managed to escape many of the pitfalls and addictions into which most of her celebrated comrades tumbled. Her three whirlwind marriages – to Mr. Rock Star, Mr. Wall Street Icon, and Mr. Record Producer – eventually hooked her up with her BFF, Fortune. An occasional glitch, perhaps a dateless night or a dull party, threatened a peek behind the curtain, but there was always another party or a better accolade to chase away the cloud.
Infamy thrived on her growing madam reputation, wreaking havoc in the lives she blew through and causing grief for her family and those few friends that truly loved her. Her growing cache of party girls that she owned and bestowed at will fueled the addictive power she craved.
Obscurity toiled on through her modest life, raising a family that rose up and blessed her, volunteering her time, and quietly pursuing her love of books and art. She indulged her passion by bringing education and beauty into the lives of orphans and widows. She occasionally questioned why the way of the wicked prospered and the faithless lived at ease.*
But in the end, Fame received her reward in full in this life. Infamy received just compensation for her deeds. And Obscurity heard the words she longed for: you did well my good and faithful servant.**
