At the Baxter County Fair,
A sodbuster devised a plan
Requiring mindful care.
He’d just strode past the Hampshires
When his eyes beheld a sight—
A farm gal curried bristles on
Her pig, a Chester White.
Festooned around the farm gal’s neck,
A bauble on a chain,
It jingled as she curried
And replenished the pig’s grain.
The Chester White was ear-notched
With a nose-ring in its snout,
A ribbon stating, “Best of Show”
Was flapping all about.
The sodbuster’s ineloquence,
“Let’s grab some chow to eat!
A vendor that sells corndogs
Is located down the street.”
She paused her task and contemplated
On this invitation,
Then nodded the affirmative—
His heart soared with elation.
They left the barn, light-heartedly,
Were careful where they stepped,
The nose-ring of the Chester White
Bobbed while the groomed pig slept.
Through horticulture buildings,
With green beans— fresh and canned,
Past watermelon pickles,
Till they neared the corndog stand.
A barker from the carnival
With raucous voice rasped out,
“Come win a trinket for your gal!”
They both flinched from his shout.
“An elementary game of skill—
The cost—a mere four bits.
Just strike the target, cowboy—
It only takes two hits.”
Desire and greed propelled him,
For envisioned in his brain
He longed to see that trinket
Near the bauble on her chain.
The barker from the carnival
Had left him feeling flustered.
This minor glitch infringed upon
The plan of the sodbuster.
Do end-plans justify the means,
As some would understand?
Before the trinket graced the chain
Twelve-bits had transferred hands.
His plan resumed its wayward course
And he took great delight
In the farm gal with the trinket and
Her ear-notched Chester White.
Unwitting— she, with ne’er a clue,
Charmed by the trinket’s luster,
He— joyful as the day progressed,
This devious sodbuster.
His plan grew toward fruition,
Then, assaulted by deluge,
Instead of joy came feelings of
Guilt for his subterfuge.
They dined on deep-fried brownie bites
And deep-fried candy bars,
A foot long corndog on a stick—
“Fair foods”— some quite bizarre.
They sashayed through the poultry barn,
His plan was in the bag.
He coveted the Chester White
And then there came a snag.
As neon lights chased daylight’s fade,
The summer sky grew darker.
After they roamed the carnival,
She ran off with the barker!
His plan involved the Chester White,
Now sorrow— he was shaken.
He’d hoped to have upon his plate
Pan-fried blue-ribbon bacon.

Many are the plans in a man’s heart,
