Women pray to God for that “special someone” and yet neglect to ask for the right mother-in-law to go with him. They forget to mention they seek the two-for-one special or the buy one get one free deal. Making sure it is of equal or greater value, they must garner specifics:
If I had a mother-in-law, she would be the reason I love her son, the bedrock of his appeal. She would embrace the hills and troughs wrought by the blessings and curses of God, principles she taught him long ago.
Mother-in-law: This is what I want you to know, Daughter. Love the good and the bad in my son, your husband, because that is how Jesus loves us.
My mother-in-law would defy the pursuit to seduce the ties that bind her lifeline to his, forcing a tug of war that competes for the heart.
Daughter-in-law: I am honored to be part of you, my Mother. And I feel blessed you have entrusted me with not only your love, but the love of your son.
My mother-in-law would serve as my guide, helping me to navigate through the murky waters of matrimony. She would listen as I hurl frustrations at not truly knowing her son and then lead me to the sacred counsel of the Holy One, “[Wives and Husbands] Yield to obey each other because you respect Christ” (Ephesians 5:21 NCV).
Mother-in-law: Talk about everything and listen to what each other is saying. Don’t let anger fester in your life together. It is a poison that will eat your marriage. And always- always go to God and let Him mediate. Let Him lead.
Our relationship would mirror Naomi and Ruth who were like mother and daughter. Neither could live without the other as their faith in each other was secured by their love for God, likewise, their devotion to each other indicative of their loyalty to God.
Daughter-in-law: Mother, you’ve taught me that my relationship with you and my husband, your son, is a reflection of my communion with God. My love for you demonstrates my obedience to God, and ultimately, my love for Him.
As I continue to pray for that “special mother-in-law” the Lord stirs my soul and tells me to tweak the words a bit. Instead of “if,” He says, use “when,” so as not limit my power to provide you with your heart’s desire in the name of my dear Son.
