People you can lean on, I’m sure they won’t mind
One you call mum the other by name
Little ones to bug you -- it’s all the same.
Sometimes they say what a nice chap you can be
The next day comes scorn for stealing sweet Bea
Her sister spies on your most passionate moments
Recounts all to her papa for some nasty comments.
Her brother thinks it’s nice to have a pal around
Even shows you his stash not so easily found
He wanted a brother; I guess you’ll fit
You be the catcher, he’ll loan you a mitt.
Then there’s Aunt Bertha weathered and beat
She’ll invite you tea. Be prepared for a treat
She’ll wanna know your people -- who they might be
She’ll examine you thoroughly, every branch of the tree.
Over the years so many in-laws you’ll meet
Some will be drunks; some will be sweet
Some will think you are prince of a guy
Others will gossip and give you "the eye".
When all is done, the in-laws will be fine
Just quirky old folks; nosey sometimes
And of course they’ll tell you what is right
And the things you do wrong, even at night.
But, love’m ya gotta; each every one
Their daughter you married, the race is run
So, Praise God for in-laws, the strange ones too
They’ll learn to love ya -- yeah, even you.
