Suddenly Haley knew it was going to be a good day.
Haley’s morning always started the same way. After oversleeping and hitting snooze three or four times, she’d finally drag herself out of her bed to the blaring sound of her favorite CCM station – the WAY 104.5FM. Then she’d stumble down the hall to the bathroom she shared with her pesky twelve-year-old brother, Payton, start the water for her shower, and use the toilet. As the steam overflowed and filled the small confines of the bathroom, Haley would finally start to wake up and as she did, she’d always step on the digital scale.
Some mornings were not as good as today. Some mornings the scale registered higher than it had the day before and Haley knew that she’d have to work harder than ever. Mentally she’d schedule an extra workout after cheerleading practice and she’d vow to avoid carbs.
Thankfully though, over the last few weeks, Haley had been having more good days than bad. Cheerleading was in full swing, and she had already started practice runs for spring track. She was definitely burning the calories she needed to. And her best friend, Jenna had just come across some great little pills that kept you from getting hungry. The only thing better than burning calories, Haley thought, was not eating them in the first place. A couple pills at lunchtime and she was good to go.
After she had finished her shower, Haley went back to her bedroom to get dressed Yes, she thought to herself as she pulled on her size 2 jeans, today is going to be a good day. The junior prom was only a week away, and even though Haley was just a sophomore, Kyle Connell had asked her to go with him. Kyle had never seemed to notice her, that is until a few weeks ago when he’d come right up to her after fourth period and had asked her to go with him! He had even said that he thought she was pretty!
The very next day, Haley and Jenna had driven to the mall to look for the perfect formal. Three hours and several new pairs of shoes later, they had found it at David’s. Jenna had convinced Haley to get size 0, “It would just be awful if you didn’t look your best for Kyle. Anyway, you’ve got three weeks – plenty of time to lose a few.”
Today as she dressed, Haley looked at the dress bag, now hanging in her closet. Just a few more days… then watch out Tyra! She pulled out her favorite sweater, the one that hugged her slender body and made her eyes bluer than blue, and slipped it over her head. She was just finishing her makeup when her mom’s voice echoed up the stairway.
“Haley, hurry up. The bus is here!”
Putting away her blush brush, she hollered back, “I’m coming Mom – just a minute.”
Haley stuffed her make-up bag in her backpack, rushed downstairs and nearly collided with her mom in the vestibule.
‘Here, hon, here’s a Pop-Tart –take it with you. You really need to start getting up in time to have breakfast.”
“Yeah, I know mom – just been real tired – anyway, you don’t need to pick me up after practice – some of us girls are having dinner at Jenna’s house then she’s gonna bring me home, ‘kay?”
“Sure that’s fine, honey – just let me know if you need anything.”
“Great - love ya Mom.”
With that, Haley kissed her mom good-bye and hurried out the door and down the sidewalk toward the bus that was waiting beside the curb. Just before she reached it though, she paused by a trash can that was waiting for the garbage pickup. Glancing over her shoulder, Haley carefully lifted the lid and slipped the Pop-Tart inside.
With that, she dusted off her hands and ran the last few steps to the bus. Jumping on, Haley thought to herself once again, Yep, today is going to be a good day.
