They ran away so fast, you woulda thought they’d seen a ghost or somethin’.
Imagine, being ‘fraid of my li’l Sera. -- She’s the most harmless li’l thang.
Now Father, I hafta fess up. I knew they’d be scared. And I wanted ‘em to be scared.
But I done had enough of their bullyin’.”
“What exactly did you do, dear?” asked Father Brown who had heard countless confessions on all manner of subjects. “And who, or what, is Sera?”
Nellie unzipped her backpack further and out popped Sera’s head.
Father Browne almost fell out of his chair.
“It’s ok Father. She won’t hurt nothin’.”
“Is it… tame? Will she, um, you know?”
“Don’ you worry Father. Sera, she been descented.”
Father chuckled. “I can see why those boys were afraid.”
The skunk climbed out of the backpack and curled up in Nellie’s arms.
“You didn’t harm those boys Nellie. I know you’re a good girl. You mind your Momma. But sometimes, well, some people have got to learn things the hard way. Let's hope those boys learned a lesson today.”
Nellie breathed a sigh of relief.
”But I’d be careful about bringing your Sera around town. I don’t think the Ladies Auxiliary would take to her as quickly as I have.” He patted Sera’s back gently.
“So, this don’ disqualify me from going to Nunnery School when I’m older?”
Father Browne smiled. “No, dear, you work hard in school and I’m sure the convent would be happy to have you when you’re old enough.”
“I don’ talk too good, but I’m a good reader. Momma says I’m real smart, when I put my mind to it. Do you think them boss nuns would let me keep Sera, or a ‘nother like her?”
“You’d have to talk to Sister about that dear, when the time comes. But don’t you worry about that now. Let’s just get you safely through elementary school first, shall we?”
“Ok Father.”
“Now, how about you say three Hail Mary’s -- one for each of those boys you frightened.”
“Yes, Father,” said Nellie.
After Nellie's confession Father Browne said, “Now, before you go, how about we introduce Miss. Clayton to your little Sera?”
Father Browne was sporting a mischievous grin.
Nellie laughed. “Your secretary, she’ll like Sera all right -- but not at first sight.”
“Young lady, I think you’ve just given me a wonderful idea for this Sunday’s sermon…”

Funny story and great title,too--a personal name always sparks my curiosity, and I never would have guessed that Sera was a skunk! Great job!
